About Ocean Aero:

Ocean Aero is an award-winning US company that has created the world’s first and only environmentally powered Autonomous Underwater and Surface Vehicle (AUSV). Ocean Aero’s autonomous marine robot, the Triton, operates exclusively on wind and solar energy and performs long endurance missions on the ocean surface with the ability to dive below the waves for underwater operations. The Triton uses a complex array of custom-built sensors, marinized electronics and software systems to operate, sense and communicate in the environment.

Role Description:

The Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing and implementing electrical subsystems and subassemblies for the Ocean Aero Triton. The ideal candidate will have experience in PCB design and prototyping, generating Bill of Materials (BOMs), and sending manufacturing files. Experience with driving stepper motors, linear actuators, servos, and brushless motors is important. Understanding of sensors and circuits including preamps, amplifiers, signal conditioners, and voltage translation. Power supply design, including switch mode power supplies and their limitations. Knowledge of low-level protocols including I2C, CAN, RS485, RS232, USB, Ethernet, and others expected.

The Electrical Design Engineer will be working alongside a team of creative engineers with a diverse set of backgrounds and skills. Ocean Aero has a collaborative culture with plenty of opportunities for growth and ownership. This role will report to the Director of Engineering.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Mechanical, Software, and Field Test Engineering teams to design, assemble, test, document, and certify vehicle subsystems
  • Design, improve, and implement electrical subsystems and subassemblies ensuring reliability and efficiency
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of technical principles and concepts in Electrical Engineering
  • Support product releases to manufacturing and customer deployments
  • Identify and resolve design issues, providing technical support for Testing and Fabrication Teams
  • Write quality, well-structured documentation to support production, including test procedures, records, BOMs, training, etc.

Role Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering
  • 2+ years of experience in PCB design
  • Familiar with cable design and interconnections
  • Work with Software and Firmware engineers to define requirements and interfaces
  • Ability to think independently about creative solutions to design problems
  • Team player, with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Commitment to rigorous testing practices and design process flows
  • Ability to travel occasionally, as needed
  • US Government position, US Citizenship required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance
  • Possess a valid Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) or successfully pass the requirements to obtain one
  • Ability to pass drug screen, background check, and motor vehicle screening

  • Experience with cable splices, potting materials epoxy/polyurethane, submersible electronics
  • Proficient in schematic capture and PCB Layout
  • Capable of assembling electronic components and perform hand solder or surface mount component reflowing
  • Basic knowledge of common script languages, such as python
  • Industry Microcontroller Programming experience. Cortex ARM M3/4, such as STM32
  • Experience with PCB Design Software, SPICE circuit simulation tools, C/C++, Microsoft Project, and MATLAB
  • Experience with the marine environment and systems (including ROVs, UUVs, USVs)
  • Ability to build test equipment for subassemblies, use programmable power supplies and oscilloscopes, and assemble boards with solder paste and stencils
  • General interest in robotics
