Job Summary/Purpose:

Responsible for providing high quality and professional legal advice and representation on retail regulatory matters. These responsibilities include performing legal functions and providing legal advice that will assist others in formulating key policies, deciding courses of action, and understanding applicable rules, systems, or processes in strategically important areas as well as preparing filings and handling matters through the regulatory approval processes, including administrative litigation if required.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Possesses superior analytical and legal writing skills.
  • Provides ethical and professional legal representation before regulatory agencies, including the Mississippi Public Service Commission, and courts of law.
  • Must maintain a working knowledge of applicable regulatory and compliance regulations and utilize this knowledge to anticipate issues and advise company personnel on developing effective legal or other strategies to resolve them.
  • Works effectively as part of a team and demonstrates adaptability and agility in working within a large organization.
  • Possesses a strong understanding of roles and responsibilities within a matrixed organization and demonstrates skill in working together as part of a team to address legal and business issues and challenges.
  • Possesses confidence and strong leadership skills, including the ability to lead legal projects and teams of individuals without necessarily having direct supervisory authority.
  • Is self-motivated and capable of providing high quality work product with limited direct oversight and supervision.
  • Demonstrates emotionally intelligent communication skills.
  • Understands the business processes across and through the Company that are relevant to his or her practice area or specialty.
  • Effectively drives multiple tasks, projects, and initiatives, both long and short term. Surpasses expectations by exceeding quality standards and/or deadlines.
  • Effectively supervises the work of paraprofessionals and administrative staff.
  • Responsible for leading discrete initiatives or projects to successful resolution.
  • Able to perform high quality legal work without the involvement of outside counsel and, on occasions when outside counsel is engaged, manage the work of outside lawyers.
  • Participate in trade association and bar association activities related to state public utility commission regulation.
  • Due to its emphasis on high quality client service and legal representation, this position may at times require work to be performed in excess of a typical 40-hour work week and/or outside of regular business hours.

Minimum Requirements-Education:

A Juris Doctor degree is required. License or ability to obtain license to practice law in the state of Mississippi is required.

Minimum Requirements-Experience:

Counsel: 4+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house in one or more applicable areas of expertise, such as Regulatory (federal and/or state), Corporate/Commercial, Litigation, Nuclear, Environmental. Experience advising an electric utility is preferred. Civil litigation experience is strongly preferred, including managing and/or developing litigation strategy.

Sr Counsel: 6+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house in one or more applicable areas of expertise, such as Regulatory (federal and/or state), Commercial or General Litigation, Nuclear, or Environmental. Experience advising an electric utility is preferred. Civil litigation experience is strongly preferred. including managing and/or developing litigation strategy.

Minimum Requirements-Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Proficient in a defined legal practice area or specialty. Basic industry knowledge, including awareness of the Company’s strategic business values and objectives, and working knowledge of applicable regulatory and compliance regulations. Demonstrated ability to provide strategic and regulatory (or commercial) legal advice and recommendations. Superior analytical and legal writing skills, ability to present clear and practical legal positions. Ability to work within a large matrixed organization and as part of a team to complete projects. Able to perform legal work ethically and with the utmost professionalism.
